'My confidence wasn't at 100%' â?? Danlad Ibrahim opens up on 2022 World Cup selection

Former Black Stars goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim has admitted that despite being named in Ghana's 2022 World Cup squad, he initially doubted whether he would make the final cut. Ibrahim was one of only two locally based players selected for the tournament in Qatar, a remarkable achievement for the then 19-year-old Asante Kotoko shot-stopper. But the journey was not without uncertainty. "Seeing my name in the provisional squad gave me hope of making the final team, but honestly, my confidence wasn't at 100%," he revealed. His inclusion came after first-choice goalkeepers were ruled out through injury, opening the door for the young keeper. Despite the doubts, Ibrahim's performances for Kotoko had already put him on the radar. "Playing for Kotoko increases your chances of getting a call-up, especially when you perform wholeheartedly. Nothing special, just being myself and staying focused on the work." Ibrahim had established himself as a reliable presence for the Porcupine Warriors, keeping multiple clean sheets and helping the club to Ghana Premier League glory in the 2021-22 season. His pedigree with national youth teams, including winning the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, also strengthened his case. For Ibrahim, the World Cup call-up was the culmination of years of consistency. And for local players dreaming of similar opportunities, his message remains clear. "Work hard every week, perform consistently, and stay disciplined. If you do that, your chance of earning a national team call-up will surely come."
