'It depends on the coach' â?? Agyemang-Badu says Andre Ayew's World Cup fate lies with Otto Addo

Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has weighed in on the growing debate over Andre Ayew's potential inclusion in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup, insisting the decision rests solely with head coach Otto Addo. Speaking exclusively to Citi Sports, Agyemang-Badu acknowledged his former teammate's recent form—Ayew scored on his debut for Dutch side NAC Breda over the weekend—but stressed that individual performances alone do not guarantee selection. "Normally it depends on the coach, his philosophy, his ideas and the kind of players he needs for the World Cup," Agyemang-Badu said. "Andre is doing very well; he's playing well and scoring goals. If the coach thinks his philosophy and game plan require him, then he merits a place in the team." The 2009 U-20 World Cup winner, who played alongside Ayew in that victorious campaign, noted that the veteran forward remains focused on his club duties while staying ready for national service. "He hasn't stopped playing football. What I know about him is that he's concentrated on his club football, but if there is an opportunity for him to help the nation, he will be willing to come." Agyemang-Badu also acknowledged that whatever squad Otto Addo names will face intense scrutiny from fans and pundits. "When the list comes out we will all scrutinise it and support the team. But at the end of the day the coach knows the kind of players he wants to go with." Ghana is expected to announce its final squad after May, with the World Cup now less than 92 days away.
