Ghana call up Auxerre defender Senaya despite Togo selection in latest dual-national battle

Ghana have called up Marvin Senaya for upcoming international friendlies against Austria and Germany despite the defender already being named in the squad of Togo for the same FIFA international window. The 25-year-old right-back, who plays for AJ Auxerre in Ligue 1, had earlier been included in Togo’s squad for friendlies against Guinea and Niger. However, Ghana head coach Otto Addo also named the defender in his 26-man squad for matches scheduled to be played in Vienna and Stuttgart later this month. Senaya was born in France and is the son of former Togolese international Yao Mawuko Senaya. Reports indicate he also has Ghanaian roots, making him eligible to represent the Black Stars. It remains unclear which country the defender will choose to represent during the international window. This is not the first time Ghana has attempted to secure the international allegiance of a dual-eligible player. In March 2024, Otto Addo called up Mohamed Diomande of Rangers FC for friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda despite his involvement with the Ivory Coast U23 side. Diomande, a product of the Right to Dream Academy who grew up in Ghana but was born in Ivory Coast, eventually declined the invitation to represent his country of birth. Senaya’s situation now presents a similar dilemma as the defender weighs his international future. Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.
