'A victory won on the pitch has been stolen' - Didier Drogba condemns CAF's decision to strip Senegal of AFCON title

Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba has added his voice to the growing chorus of outrage over the Confederation of African Football's decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, describing the ruling as a devastating blow to the credibility of African football. In a strongly worded statement, the former Chelsea striker expressed disbelief that a result decided on the pitch could be overturned months later in a boardroom. "We all watched Senegal fight bravely and defeat Morocco in a historic final. But now, months later, a decision made in a boardroom has changed that story. The CAF Appeals Committee has overturned the result… and suddenly, a victory won on the pitch has been stolen," Drogba stated. The ruling, delivered on March 17, saw CAF's Appeal Board uphold Morocco's protest and declare the Atlas Lions 3-0 winners of the final, stripping Senegal of the title they won in January after extra time. The decision centred on Senegal's 17-minute walk-off during stoppage time to protest a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Drogba emphasized that the controversy extends far beyond the fate of one trophy, warning that it strikes at the heart of the sport's credibility on the continent. "This isn't just about one trophy. It's about the credibility, dignity, and spirit of African football," he said. The Ivorian icon called for unity among stakeholders to restore confidence in the game, reminding them that African football has produced giants who have conquered the world. "Africa is not small. Africa has produced giants—players who conquered Europe and inspired millions." Drogba urged those in power to prioritise transparency and trust, suggesting the matter could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary. "We must not allow ambiguity and politics to steal the joy of victory from our people," he said. His comments reflect widespread anger among African football fans and stakeholders who fear the decision sets a dangerous precedent and damages the sport's image across the continent.
